Signs of Termite Infestation
Termites can enter buildings through hidden cracks and crevices and remain concealed within soil, walls and structural materials. Three common signs of termite activity are swarmers, mud shelter tubes and termite damage.
1. Termite Swarmers
Termite swarmers, or alates, are winged termites that leave established colonies to reproduce. Finding swarmers indoors, particularly around windows, doors or other areas, may indicate termite activity nearby. Discarded wings can also be a warning sign.
Swarmers found near a building’s foundation should also be investigated, although their presence outside does not necessarily mean the building is infested.
2. Mud Shelter Tubes
Mud shelter tubes are a common sign of subterranean termite activity. They may appear along foundations, walls, support structures or plumbing areas.
These tubes allow termites to travel between their colony and food sources while remaining protected. Simply removing the tubes does not eliminate the infestation, so professional inspection is recommended.
3. Termite Damage
Termite damage may appear as weakened timber, damaged wood or other unusual changes to building materials. Damage containing dried soil or visible live termites may indicate termite activity.
However, visible damage does not always mean an infestation is currently active. A professional inspection can help determine whether the damage is old or associated with an active infestation.
Early Detection Matters
Termites can remain hidden for long periods before signs become visible. Regular inspections and preventive termite protection can help identify potential problems early and reduce the risk of extensive damage.
If you notice swarmers, mud shelter tubes or possible termite damage, arrange a professional inspection rather than relying on visible signs alone.
