Signs of a Rat Infestation in Commercial Premises

Signs of a Rat Infestation

Rats can be a serious concern for warehouses, factories, offices, food premises and other commercial properties. They can contaminate food and surfaces, damage stored goods and packaging, and gnaw on electrical wiring and building materials.

Because rats are often active at night and can hide in concealed areas, signs of their presence may appear before the rats themselves are seen.

1. Rat Droppings

Droppings are one of the most common signs of rat activity. They may be found around food storage areas, warehouses, kitchens, storage rooms and along areas frequently used by rodents.

Fresh droppings are generally darker and softer, while older droppings become drier and lighter in colour.

2. Gnaw Marks and Damage

Rats regularly gnaw on materials and may leave bite marks on cardboard, plastic, wood and other items.

Damaged packaging or electrical wiring can be an important warning sign, particularly in warehouses, factories and storage facilities.

3. Grease or Smear Marks

Rats often travel along walls, pipes and other fixed pathways. Their oily fur can leave dark smear marks on surfaces where they frequently pass.

These marks may be more noticeable along walls, beams, pipes and other concealed routes.

4. Nesting Materials

Rats may build nests using materials such as paper, cardboard, fabric and insulation.

Nesting areas are commonly found in quiet, sheltered locations such as storage areas, behind equipment, within wall cavities and around cluttered spaces.

5. Scratching or Scurrying Sounds

Unusual scratching, gnawing or movement sounds, particularly at night, may indicate rodent activity.

These sounds can come from concealed areas such as false ceilings, wall cavities, roof spaces or storage areas.

6. Unusual Odours

A persistent musky or unpleasant smell may develop in areas where rodents are active, particularly where there is urine, nesting material or a larger infestation.

7. Rat Sightings

Seeing a rat during the day can be a warning sign, although it does not necessarily indicate a severe infestation. Any repeated sightings should be investigated, especially when accompanied by other signs of activity.

Why Early Detection Matters

A rat infestation can become more difficult to manage if left unchecked. Early detection allows businesses to identify potential entry points, assess the level of activity and implement appropriate control measures.

Good housekeeping, proper waste management and sealing potential entry points can help reduce the conditions that attract rodents. However, an established infestation may require professional inspection, monitoring and targeted treatment.

Protect Your Commercial Premises

If you notice droppings, gnaw marks, nesting materials or other signs of rat activity, professional assessment can help determine the source and extent of the infestation.
